Romance Scams Targeting Adults 50+

People using dating apps and social media are being targeted by fake romantic partners who build trust and then ask for money. The safest rule is simple: if you have not met the person in real life, do not send money or gifts.

Who Is at Risk

Anyone looking for love online, especially people chatting with someone who quickly becomes very personal or asks to move the conversation off the original app.

What to Watch For

Watch for someone who cannot meet in person, has a far-away job or emergency story, and starts asking for money, gift cards, or urgent help.

What to Do

Stop talking to the person, talk to someone you trust, and contact your bank or payment company right away if you already sent money.
