New Scam Targeting Zoning Permit Applications

The FBI warns that criminals are sending fraudulent emails that look like they come from city or county planning officials to people requesting permits, aiming to steal information or money. These messages target applicants for zoning and building approvals and may include fake links or attachment requests.

Who Is at Risk

People and businesses applying for city or county planning, zoning, or building permits—such as contractors, developers, and property owners—are most at risk.

What to Watch For

Unexpected messages that appear to be from local officials asking for payments, personal documents, login details, or to click links or open attachments, especially if they push urgency or use odd sender addresses.

What to Do

Do not click links or open attachments; verify the request by calling your city or county planning office using a phone number from its official website, and report the message to the agency and your IT support.
