FBI Issues Warning on Risks of Foreign-Made Mobile Apps
The FBI is warning that many popular mobile apps used in the United States—especially those developed by foreign companies—may pose serious data security risks. Due to foreign laws, particularly in countries like China, user data collected by these apps can potentially be accessed by government authorities.
Who Is at Risk
Anyone using apps made by foreign companies.
What to Watch For
Watch for apps asking for access to contacts, photos, location, messages, or other personal data that seems unnecessary for how the app works. Once permissions are granted, these apps can continuously gather sensitive information from a device, including contacts, messages, location data, and more—even extending to people who never downloaded the app.
What to Do
Users should limit data sharing, download only trusted apps, keep devices updated, use strong passwords, and carefully review app permissions and terms before installing. If suspicious activity or data compromise occurs, individuals should report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
